life as a dog trainer

There is a common misconception that being a dog trainer means “just playing with dogs all day”. That is SO far from the truth! Dog trainers support dogs and their owners, help them learn and grow, and more!

This career is not an easy one, but it is so rewarding to see your clients and their dogs grow together!

Being a dog trainer means:

  • Obtaining training, education, and eventually certification.

  • Maintaining certification by regularly attending conferences and seminars.

  • Seeing clients, providing followup handouts, email support, and more.

  • Long days on your feet followed by long periods of time on the computer.

The Mentorship

This program is designed to help YOU become a dog trainer, and may lead to employment with Mountain Mutt Dog Training after completion!

This is a 6 month program. If selected, you will be expected to dedicate time each week towards your education!

For the first 3 months, expect:

  • Weekly reading assignments followed by discussions.

  • Weekly shadowing of at least 1-2 client sessions each week.

For the second 3 months, expect:

  • Weekly case briefings and discussions.

  • Monthly reading assignments.

  • Weekly hands-on time teaching clients.

Certification and employment

This Mentorship came to be when I tried to hire a second trainer for Mountain Mutt Dog Training, and found there was a severe lack of qualified trainers in the area. This town needs more dog trainers, and I want to see that happen.

Those who join this program should have a goal to become a CPDT or KPA Certified dog trainer who uses positive training methods.

After completing this mentorship, you may have the opportunity to work for Mountain Mutt Dog Training as one of our trainers.

COSTS and Apply

The cost of this Mentorship is $600. Those accepted can expect to be paid for any hands-on training work they do during the second 3 months of the program. Scholarships are available.
